Just to put this issue to bed...La Mer (1943, famously sung by Charles Trenet)-a very beautiful French ballad about the sea itself and the beauty of nature; Beyond The Sea (1959, famously sung by Bobby Darin)-an easy listening song that shares only its music with La Mer. It is not an "English version". The lyrics are completely different. It is about a man remembering the woman he loves. Both good songs, both very different.

You're wrong! The original song is ''la mer'' Beyond the sea was write way after Charles Trenet wrote la mer!!
